Executing an Organized Move
© 2004, Vicki Norris, Restoring Order®
PRE-MOVE
ARRANGEMENTS
- Reserve a rental
truck
- Arrange for help on
moving day (cash in on unreturned favors)
- Call your insurance
agent to see what changes to expect in your policies. Ask if moving is
covered (while in transit) and arrange for insurance for the new home.
SERVICES
- Watch incoming mail
and note those mailers who need to be individually notified of your new
address. Junk mailers will follow you if you fill out “Change of Address”
forms at the post office.
new address
- Switch subscriptions
to new address (newspaper & magazines)
- Switch utility
services to new address
Electric, disposal, water, telephone, and cable companies
Put top priority on internet connection (sometimes it takes weeks for a new
install)
PLANNING
- Take photos of new
home for the planning stage
- Create a floor plan
for your new home
- Using your photos,
floor plan, and creativity determine how you want to use each space in
your new home. Begin to purpose each room ahead of time. Ask yourself
questions about how you will utilize the new space: What was frustrating
about your use of space in your current home? Will the new bonus room be
used for recreation or office space? Where will overflow items be kept?
PACKING
- Begin collecting
boxes of all sizes
- Start packing
infrequently used items by type. Pack by their destination room,
not their current room.
- Assign a color to
each floor (i.e.: red=basement; blue= main floor; yellow= upstairs) and
use matching colored paper to tape to each box that should be moved into
that floor, and label with the room name. This will help many hands move
boxes to the correct floor and will mean less writing on labels. Full size
paper labels are easier to read than tiny stickers.
- Get some “Fragile”
stickers for your boxes, or at least label the boxes to indicate fragility
- Place plants in
cardboard containers. Unpack immediately upon arrival.
NEW HOME
- Get an inspection of
the new home
- Check appliances and
systems in the new home to ensure they work (get appliance manuals and
warranties from previous owner if possible)
- Get fireplaces and
ducts cleaned in new home if applicable
- Have carpets cleaned
and walls repaired and freshly painted if applicable
LEAVING
- Mow lawn before you
leave old home
- Clean old home
- Leave manuals,
instructions, and warranties that go with furniture, fixtures, or décor
- Defrost refrigerator
and freezer if they being transported
POST
MOVE
- Send “We’ve Moved”
cards to friends, family and associates.
- Check with the IRS to
see what expenses can be deducted on your next return
- Make list of desired
repairs and improvements by room so they can be tackled over time
- Set a date for a
housewarming party within a month, which will force you to completely
unpack, finish repairs, hang pictures, etc.
