A Mother's Day Gift

Today my 5 month old son laughed out loud. In his sleep. It was a deep belly laugh, not just a coo or a giggle. It was the kind of laugh that bursts out when you read a funny card that tickles your fancy. It was one of those moments that you file in your heart.

Motherhood has been such a stretching, joyful, exhausting, poetic experience for me, as I’m sure it is for legions of mothers before me. I’m humbled by the new respect and awe I have for all the mothers who have preceded me in this brave role of motherhood. Mothers can balance a baby on the hip while simultaneously unloading the dishwasher, catching some spit up, running a load of laundry, closing a business deal on the phone, and forming a grocery list for the following week in the back of their minds. I know this because I live every day in this crazy state of multi-tasking, yet I am committed to savoring those sleeping belly-laugh moments. I want to make sure that I don’t get so caught up in the balancing act that I neglect to look for and relish the treasures along the way.

Even though my motherhood journey isn’t very far along, and I haven’t written down any milestones in a fancy scrapbook, I have captured many moments in my heart. For all the mothers out there, I want to give you a simple gift. My gift to you is a poem, born in my heart and home. Regardless of whether your children are toddlers, teens, or adults, all mothers remember their babies. My guess is even when I am old I will look in my child’s face and remember him as a babe. I will want to hold him tight to my skin and run my fingers through his silky hair and speak quietly into his life.

It’s the simple moments that are the very best
Tenderness spilling over as you watch him rest

Hearing her giggle as you greet her each morn
Pulling back the blanket spitty and worn

Squealing with glee as he rolls over at last
Don’t look away; it happens so fast!

Memorizing her scent to learn it by heart
Snuggling and caressing each time you part

Laughing off the stains and trying new food
Enjoying how peas can lift his mood

Stopping the hurrying and slowing down a bit
To let her touch velvet leaves or sandy grit

Don’t let it get away, this precious time
Life is too short to complain and whine

You’re low on patience and sleep sometimes
But life doesn’t offer a chance to rewind

So seize these moments every chance you get
Savor them, file them and live to expect…

That when you reach the end of this life’s road
Motherhood will have made you richer, not old

May your file of moments grow day by day as you slow down and take pleasure in the gifts and blessings you’ve been given.

Happy Mother’s Day to mommies everywhere,

Vicki Norris
