Roz Rushing woke up Monday, Feb. 12, with a
super-cluttered, stress-inducing home office, and by
the time she went to sleep, a team of fairylike
organizer gurus had transformed the room into a
functional workspace.
Rushing, a PartyLite consultant
and employee at Geren’s Farm Supply, was the winner of
a monthly contest on KATU’s “A.M. Northwest” show,
called “Get Organized/Restoring Order in 2007.”
Viewers submit photos of their nastiest home offices
in hopes that the team of organizational professionals
from Portland-based anti-clutter consultants Restoring
Order could undo years – perhaps a lifetime – of bad
habits and disorganization.
“I wanted it so bad,” Rushing
recalled. “I watch all the ‘Mission: Organization’
shows (on HGTV) – it’s the only show I (record). When
I found out, I literally jumped up and down.”
Half a dozen women from Restoring
Order descended on Rushing’s Trubel Road home at 9
a.m., leaving no stone unturned in the quest for
better home office functionality.
After the Restoring Order team
interviewed Rushing to figure out her habits (good and
bad) and her needs, the team emptied the room – a
“total burndown” in organizer lingo. Every pen, every
file and every paper clip had to be taken out and
organized in 24 banker’s boxes. Most of the items were
brought back – some will find homes elsewhere – and
reorganized by function.
Restoring Order team member Dawn
Grillo said the process didn’t involve any massive
furniture overhauls – in fact, the only major purchase
ahead of Rushing is a simple literature organizer for
her PartyLite materials, a minimal expenditure.
“It’s not about the Pottery Barn
or Martha Stewart look,” Grillo said, “it’s about
functionality.”
Rushing had a huge part in
figuring out where all her stuff should go. “Those
shows where (organizers) do it for you are a façade,
they never work,” Grillo said. “You have to be
involved for it to work.”
After a nine-hour day, organizers
left Rushing with homework: getting her documents
filed. Restoring Order owner Vicki Norris will show up
at her house Monday, Feb. 19, to make sure she got it
done, in anticipation of the live KATU broadcast from
her home Tuesday, Feb. 20.
“I’m so excited,” Rushing said of
the reorganization. “It’s very doable, and I already
feel less stressed about this room. It’s really going
to grow my business immensely. It’s huge, just huge.”
