At Home With Vicki

One of our basic principles at Restoring Order® is that organizing is an organic process that is unique to each person.  There are no cookie-cutter solutions that will work for everyone. I thought it would be fun to share some ways that I organize MY spaces! So, I am taking you behind the scenes our family homestead and sharing my own organizing solutions and cozy touches that make Dream Acres my favorite place to be! My hope is that you find inspiration in these ideas and the motivation to get creative with your own spaces.

I bartered with a painter to paint (white) & shabby my formerly oak kitchen cabinets. Then I took the doors off the two cabinets on either side of my sink. Now my kitchen is my FAVE place to be!

My second son’s nursery was adjacent to our bedroom and I couldn’t give up the nursery when he grew…unless I turned it into something I loved. So, my CLOSET ROOM was born! I had always wanted a dressing room. I was inspired by FILING CABINETS. I far prefer FRONT LOADING cabinets where you can see all the files, vs. lateral, side-loading cabinets. If you think about it, closets are actually side-loading where we can only see the sleeve or edge of our clothing. So, we painted the room, Trevor shabby-chic’d some boards, chose cute hat hooks, and voila – my CLOSET ROOM was born! Now, I love to be in this space! (See the More Good Day Oregon segment featuring my closet!)

Another peek inside my closet room….I love repurposing things (plus I’m really visual) so I turned this garden gate into my scarf and jewelry storage.

From our kitchen to our barn to our “gathering room”, we are hosting people nearly daily at Dream Acres. Ordering your space makes room for what’s most important – people!

I love collecting jars of different sizes. They’re great for taking flowers to someone, collecting bottle caps or dandelion wishes. But they were taking over my kitchen! One of my organizing strategies is to examine quantity and to begin to subdivide when categories get crowded. So I bought this charming aqua (my fave color) cabinet, loaded it up, and I store it in a breezeway adjacent to my kitchen. Perfect!

I love to read and have made a custom literature shelf in my office. You can carve out a reading nook anywhere in your home. Add candles, tea, and a good read and voila – you have bliss!

Another peek inside my Closet Room….I love architectural salvage as well as vintage things – and pulling them into the NOW with a new use. This vintage children’s bed footboard serves as my belt storage. What can YOU repurpose?

So, there you have it! A peek into how an organizers organizes her own spaces! As you organize your spaces remember to think about how YOU use your spaces and your things. Then, GET CREATIVE and make your spaces align with WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU!

I’d love to see some of your creative solutions or organizing ideas! Please leave a comment on this blog post or share your pictures on our facebook page!
